Creative Play with Clay and its Tray

My little one just loves to play with clay. This summer, creative indoor activities have been a life-saver for me and Giane. I’m sharing quickly how I make a tray for her.

Having Bumper Dough and Tool Set from Early Learning Centre, which she received on her 1st birthday, is a great blessing! A very useful and smart gift, special thanks to Ninong JM and Ninang Betchay.

I prepared a clay/playdough tray which is filled with a number of props on hand for an easy set-up of dough activities. I have just arranged them in a more orderly manner in our tray and added craft supplies I found from our home. It avoids all the fussing about when trying to organize play dough activities with her.

WHAT’S IN GIANE’S TRAY?

1 | Flat chopping board – this is where he can roll and make his own designs.

2 | Vegetable and Fruit cutters – since she is into vegetables and fruits, it is a great way to associate the shapes, while she ‘creates’ these kinds of food.

3 | Small Tape Rolls – dual purpose: it works as great cutters and for sticking activity, too! Good thing I found this in our wedding DIY box.

4 | Clay Roller  – This roller comes from the original set which is really very useful for fine motor skills activities.

5 | Bladeless Scissors – Giane knows the concept of cutting and loves exploring this pair of scissors.  These bladeless scissors work great for exploration! And it’s so fun to cut clay with scissors, too! I got our scissors from my 1st set of art materials when I did my and Neo’s scrapbook

6 | Other materials – small items I found at home like an old comb, clothespin, popsicle stick, etc.,  which can be used for stamping and transferring of the clay

7 | Clay – Last but not the least, the clay! We use the one included in the ELC dough set.

Clay is one of the cheapest and easiest tools to keep Giane occupied, helps her to be creative and learns things like shapes, color, and textures. And the best part is that all this is done while we are having lots of fun.

Important Tips:

  • Buy a non-toxic version or much better… create your own dough.
  • Put the clay in an airtight container after use.
  • If it tends to dry, soak it in water or put inside the fridge and leave it out till it gets back to the normal texture.

Benefits of playing with clay:

1. Children roll, pinch, pat, shape the clay according to their preference that helps to develop their small muscles in their fingers and hands. This process is also known as fine motor skills.

2. Manipulating clay helps children with their hand and eye coordination.

3. Clay can help children learn.

4. Clay is therapeutic and has a real calming effect not only on kids but also on adults.

5. It is a self-expression.

Happy parenting!!
